Call for papers
Special Issue 2022: Digital history

Guest editor: Pelle Snickars

In this call we invite scholars who work at the intersection of history of science and ideas – as well as adjacent historical disciplines – and digital research, to propose papers on questions relating to the ways in which digitalisation has affected the practices of historical research and (as a result) our understanding of the past. For historical disciplines digital approaches and methods are now integrated parts of established research practices, simultaneously downplaying and highlighting disciplinary distinctiveness. With this special issue, the inherent interdisciplinarity of the field of digital history will be brought to the fore, while at the same time raising important questions about the many challenges that still exist within the field. Empirical, theoretical as well as method-focussed papers, are invited. These can be written in English, Swedish or other Scandinavian languages. These contributions might be, for example, related to issues like:

  • What new and relevant research questions can historians of science and ideas hope to answer by using digitised sources, digital methods and interdisciplinary approaches?
  • How are digitised sources and digital methods used in empirical historical research, i.e. close vs distant reading, digital source criticism and the role of visualisations in historical knowledge production?
  • How has digitisation affected the availability of sources, i.e. how they are preserved, structured and organised how can we work with “born-digital” sources?
  • How do processes of digitalisation affect the representation, communication and accessibility of historical knowledge and historians’ wider public engagement?
